Smoothie Recipes

One of my girlfriends recently asked me for some smoothie recipes. I typed up a little list for her and I thought you guys might appreciate it, too.

Green Monster

  • 1 cup milk (unsweetened vanilla almond has fewer calories than cow’s milk)
  • 1-2 cups raw spinach
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter (this adds some calories but it will help keep you full for a long time)
  • you can also add protein powder to this
  • if you’re feeling dangerous, add a tablespoon of Hershey’s syrup or Nutella

Breakfast Nutrition (This won’t really fill you up for long but we drink one every morning for the nutrients, plus it’s so delicious. I usually pair it with a piece of toast and an egg and then it keeps me full all morning)

  • 1/2 cup Simply Orange juice (buy the kind with pineapple added too, it’s so good! but don’t buy the Dole brand, it’s gross)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup mixed tropical fruit blend (I buy a Dole blend at Sam’s that has mango, pineapple, strawberries, and peaches)
  • 1 cup spinach
  • Optional: banana, fresh blueberries, a peeled orange

Meal-Sized (This has quite a few calories but it’s perfect for a meal-replacement. We sometimes take one of these for lunch and it keeps both of us full all afternoon. The oatmeal blends up and you don’t really even notice it.)

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1/4 cup raw oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon almond or sunflower seed butter
  • 1 small banana

Afternoon Snack

  • 1 cup milk (I’d use almond here to save calories)
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1/2 cup berries
  • 1/2 small banana
  • 1 scoop protein powder

Pumpkin Pie

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup raw pumpkin puree (Libby’s from the can)
  • 1 small banana (can peel and freeze ahead of time so you don’t need ice)
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or plain cinnamon
  • this is really good if you add a chopped pear or an apple instead of pumpkin
  • you might want to add a little honey/stevia/maple syrup just to sweeten it a touch

I like to add spinach to almost every smoothie. It’s such a great way to pack in greens without having to actually eat them (let’s be honest, very few people LOVE eating raw spinach daily). A great calorie-saving trick is to use unsweetened vanilla almond milk in place of skim milk. It has a slight different flavor, but with 60 fewer calories per cup than a glass of skim, who cares!

Let me know if you give any of these recipes a try!

  2. Abby have you ever used powdered peanut butter?? It’s good. Gives you flavor but much less fat. These sound good….except for all the spinach! 🙂
